ISOBS was founded by two physician leaders whose combined work in patient safety, anesthesiology, and healthcare innovation continues to guide the Institute’s mission.

Fred E. Shapiro, DO, FASA
Co-Founder
Fred E. Shapiro, D.O., FASA is an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Director of research and medical student education at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He created Harvard Medical School’s first Office-Based Anesthesia CME course and wrote the seminal ASA CME article on office-based anesthesia safety and outcomes. He has advised the Massachusetts Board of Medicine and the Massachusetts Medical Society on office-based surgery guidelines and legislation, and his current research includes a closed-loop, AI-assisted anesthesia delivery system with Dr. Emery Brown.
He was named the Mass Medical Society’s Community Clinician of the Year (2023) and received the Pillars of Excellence Award at Mass Eye and Ear (2024). In May 2026, he became President of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia (SAMBA).

Richard D. Urman, MD, MBA
Co-Founder
Dr. Richard Urman is the Jay J. Jacoby Endowed Professor and Health System Chair in the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University, following 17 years at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/MGB and Harvard Medical School. He holds an MD from Harvard Medical School and an MBA from Harvard Business School, and currently serves as SAMBA Secretary and Associate Editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia (Ambulatory Section).
He has published over 600 research papers and edited several books, including “Anesthesia Outside the Operating Room” and “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).” His research is funded by the NIH, NSF, AHRQ, and APSF, and he has served on the FDA Anesthetic & Analgesic Products Advisory Committee and the National Quality Forum.
